Golf swing weight calculator

This golf swing weight calculator finds the swing weight of any club from its total weight and balance point, with no swing weight scale needed. Two clubs can weigh the same on the kitchen scales and feel nothing alike in the hands, and swing weight explains why.

14 in balance point
Fig. 1. A swing weight scale pivots the club 14 inches from the grip end. The farther the balance point sits beyond that, the heavier the club swings.

Golf swing weight calculator: enter weight and balance point

Enter the total weight of the club and its balance point, measured from the end of the grip. You get the swing weight on the standard letter and number scale.

What is swing weight in golf?

Swing weight is a measure of how heavy a golf club feels when you swing it. It is not the total weight of the club. It describes how much of that weight sits toward the head. Swing weight is written as a letter and a number, from A0, the lightest, to G9, the heaviest. Most men's clubs are around D2.

How to use the golf swing weight calculator

    1. Weigh the whole club on kitchen or postal scales and enter the weight in grams or ounces.
    2. Balance the club on a narrow edge and mark the spot where it sits level.
    3. Measure from that spot to the end of the grip and enter it in inches.
    4. Read the swing weight on the standard scale.

    Golf swing weight formula

Turning force = (balance point − 14 inches) × club weight in ounces

    Swing weight points = (turning force − 161) ÷ 1.75

Fourteen inches is the pivot of a standard swing weight scale. The scale starts at A0, which is 161 inch-ounces, and every point is another 1.75. Ten points make a letter, so D0 is 213.5 and D2 is 217.

    Swing weight calculation example

    A 7-iron weighs 425 grams, which is 14.99 ounces, and balances 28.5 inches from the grip end. The turning force is (28.5 − 14) × 14.99 = 217.4 inch-ounces. Then (217.4 − 161) ÷ 1.75 = 32.2 points above A0. Thirty points is D0, so the swing weight is D2.

Golf swing weight chart: what changes it

Change to the club Swing weight
2 grams added to the head +1 point
Grip 5 grams heavier −1 point
Shaft 9 grams heavier +1 point
Club half an inch longer +3 points

These are the fitter's rules of thumb. They explain why a new midsize grip can make a club feel lighter in the head.

    Golf swing weight calculator FAQs

How do I calculate swing weight without a scale?

Weigh the club, find its balance point, and enter both in the golf swing weight calculator above. It applies the same 14-inch pivot that a swing weight scale uses.

What is a normal swing weight for golf clubs?

Most men's clubs are built between D0 and D3. Women's and senior clubs are usually C5 to C8. Wedges often run a few points heavier than the irons.

How do I find the balance point of a golf club?

Rest the shaft across a narrow edge, such as a ruler on its side, and slide it until the club stays level. Mark the spot and measure from there to the very end of the grip.

    Does swing weight really matter?

It matters most for consistency. A set that climbs steadily in swing weight feels the same club to club, which helps timing. One odd club in the bag often turns out to be several points off.
