Golf grip size calculator

This golf grip size calculator tells you whether you need undersize, standard, midsize or jumbo grips. The grip is the only part of the club you touch, and most golfers have never checked that theirs fits. One measurement of your hand, or your glove size, is enough.

Hand length, from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger, sets the grip size

Fig. 1. Measure the hand that sits at the top of the grip: the left hand for a right-handed golfer.

Golf grip size calculator: enter your hand size

Enter the length of your hand and, if you know it, your glove size. You get the grip size to start with and how to fine-tune it.

What size golf grip do I need?

Golf grips come in four main sizes: undersize, standard, midsize and jumbo. The right golf grip size depends on the length of your hand from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger. Most men fit a standard grip, and golfers with large hands or a large glove usually need midsize.

How to use the golf grip size calculator

    1. Measure your top hand from the wrist crease to the tip of the middle finger.
    2. Enter the length in inches or centimetres.
    3. Add your glove size if you know it.
    4. Read your recommended golf grip size and where it sits on the chart.

How to measure your hand for golf grip size

Open your top hand flat, palm up. That is the left hand for a right-handed golfer. Measure from the crease at the base of the palm, where the wrist begins, to the tip of your middle finger. That one length is what grip makers use for their size charts.

    Golf grip size chart

Golf grip size Hand length Glove size
Undersize Under 7 in Men's small, women's small or medium
    Standard 7 to 8.75 in Men's medium or medium-large, women's large
    Midsize 8.25 to 9.25 in Men's large
Jumbo Over 9.25 in Men's extra large

The ranges overlap on purpose. Between sizes, the choice comes down to feel.

    Golf grip size example

A golfer's hand measures 7.5 inches and he wears a men's medium-large glove. Both point to a standard grip. If his hand measured 8.5 inches, he would be between standard and midsize, and a standard grip with two extra wraps of tape would be a sensible first try.

    Golf grip size calculator FAQs

How do I know my golf grip size?

Measure your hand and use the golf grip size calculator above. Then check it on a club: your middle two fingers should just touch the pad at the base of your thumb.

What happens if my golf grips are too small?

The hands get too busy through impact, which tends to close the face and turn shots left for a right-hander. Grips that are too big do the opposite and can leave shots out to the right.

How many wraps of tape make a midsize grip?

Each extra wrap of build-up tape under the grip adds about a sixty-fourth of an inch. Four wraps take a standard grip to midsize.

Are bigger golf grips better for arthritis?

Many golfers with sore hands find midsize or jumbo grips more comfortable, because they need less squeeze to hold. Softer rubber helps as well.
