Golf club value calculator

This golf club value calculator estimates what your used golf clubs are worth from the price when new, the age, the type of club and its condition. A club is worth what someone will pay this week, and that figure falls fastest in the first year.

Value = price new × first-year factor × later-year factor × condition

Fig. 1. The drop is steepest when the box is first opened, then slows. Condition scales the whole curve up or down.

How much are my golf clubs worth?

Used golf club value depends on four things: what the club cost new, how old it is, what type of club it is and its condition. As a rough guide, a three-year-old driver in very good condition is worth around 40% of its original price. Irons and putters hold their value better than drivers and wedges.

How to use the golf club value calculator

    1. Enter the price of the club when new.
    2. Enter its age in years.
    3. Choose the type of club and its condition.
    4. Read the estimated resale value, a fair asking range and the value chart year by year.

    Golf club value formula

    Golf club value = price new × first-year factor × later-year factor × condition

Used golf clubs lose value like cars: sharply at first, then more slowly. The two depreciation percentages are filled in when you choose the type of club, and you can overwrite them if sold listings for your model suggest it holds value better.

    Golf club value example

A driver cost 500 new and is three years old in very good condition. It keeps 60% of its value after the first year, then 82% in each of the next two years: 0.60 × 0.82 × 0.82 = 0.40. The estimated golf club value is 500 × 0.40 = 202, with a fair asking range of 178 to 226.

Golf club depreciation chart by type

Type of golf club First year Each later year
    Driver −40% −18%
Fairway wood or hybrid −40% −16%
    Set of irons −35% −12%
    Wedge −45% −20%
    Putter −30% −8%

These starting figures reflect the usual pattern in second-hand prices: drivers are replaced by new models every year, wedges wear out their grooves, and a good putter never really dates.

    Golf club value calculator FAQs

How do I find out what my used golf clubs are worth?

Start with the golf club value calculator above, then look up sold prices, not asking prices, for the same model, shaft and condition on resale sites.

Do golf clubs hold their value?

Putters and forged irons from well-known makers hold up best. Drivers and wedges fall fastest. Custom lengths, unusual shafts and worn grips all narrow the market.

How fast do golf clubs depreciate?

As a rule of thumb, expect 30% to 45% of the price to go in the first year and 8% to 20% a year after that, depending on the type of club.

When is the best time to sell used golf clubs?

Before the replacement model is announced, and at the start of the season when buyers are looking. Once the new version is in the shops, last year's drops again.
