Golf driver distance calculator
This golf driver distance calculator estimates how far you hit your driver from your swing speed. Swing speed sets the ceiling on your drives, and the strike decides how close you get to it. See your carry, your total, and the yards a better strike would add.
Golf driver distance calculator: enter your swing speed
Enter your swing speed, how well you strike it and how firm the fairways are. You get carry distance, total distance and ball speed.
What is a good driver distance?
Driver distance depends almost entirely on swing speed. An average male amateur swings at about 93 mph and carries the ball around 213 yards with a good strike, finishing near 230. Tour players swing at about 113 mph and carry it 275 yards. A good driver distance is one that matches your swing speed, which is what this calculator checks.
How to use the golf driver distance calculator
- Enter your driver swing speed in miles per hour.
- Choose how well you strike it: centred, slightly off, or from the toe or heel.
- Choose how firm the fairways are.
- Read your carry distance, total distance and ball speed. Launch angle and spin can be changed if you know yours.
Driver distance formula
Ball speed = swing speed × smash factor
Total driver distance = carry + roll
The calculator turns swing speed into ball speed using a smash factor of 1.48 for a centred strike, less when you miss the middle. It then flies the ball through the air with a typical driver launch and spin to find the carry, and adds roll for the fairway you chose.
Driver distance calculation example
At a swing speed of 93 mph with a centred strike, ball speed is 93 × 1.48 = 138 mph. That carries 213 yards. On a normal fairway it rolls a further 8%, about 17 yards, for a total driver distance of 230 yards. Hit the same swing off the toe and the carry drops to 193.

Golf driver distance calculator FAQs
How far should I hit my driver for my swing speed?
Enter your swing speed in the golf driver distance calculator above. As a guide, 93 mph gives about 213 yards of carry, and every extra 10 mph is worth roughly 30 yards.
How do I calculate driver distance from swing speed?
Multiply swing speed by 2.3 for a fair estimate of carry in yards with a good strike. So 100 mph is about 230 yards of carry before roll.
How do I find my driver swing speed?
A launch monitor or a pocket radar gives it directly, and most golf shops will measure it for free. Without one, divide your usual carry in yards by 2.3.
What adds more driver distance, swing speed or strike?
For most golfers, strike. Moving from a toe hit to the centre of the face can add 20 yards without swinging any harder.
