Golf distance calculator

This golf distance calculator estimates how far you should hit every club in the bag. Most golfers know one distance for certain and guess the rest. Give it the number you trust, your driver swing speed or your 7-iron carry, and it fills in the others.

Club carry = tour carry for that club × (your driver carry ÷ 275)

275 yards is the tour average carry with a driver. Every other club is scaled by the same share.
Fig. 1. Distances fall away through the bag in much the same proportions for everyone, so one known number is enough to estimate the rest.

Choose what you know, enter it, and pick yards or metres. You get an estimated carry distance for twelve clubs, from driver to pitching wedge.

What is a golf distance calculator?

A golf distance calculator is a tool that estimates the carry distance of each golf club from a single known figure. It gives you a full golf club distance chart, from driver to pitching wedge, so you can pick the right club for the yardage in front of you without guessing.

How to use the golf distance calculator

    1. Choose what you know: your driver swing speed or how far you carry a 7-iron.
    2. Enter that number.
    3. Pick yards or metres.
    4. Read the estimated carry distance for all twelve clubs in the chart.

    Golf club distance formula

Club distance = tour carry for that club × (your driver carry ÷ 275)

The calculator starts from published tour averages measured on launch monitors: a driver carrying 275 yards, down to a pitching wedge carrying 136. Your own driver carry, worked out from your swing speed, is compared with the tour figure, and every other club is scaled by the same share.

    Golf distance calculation example

A golfer swings the driver at 93 mph. A centred strike at that speed carries about 213 yards, which is 0.773 of the tour distance. The 7-iron estimate is 172 × 0.773 = 133 yards, and the pitching wedge is 136 × 0.773 = 105 yards.

Golf club distance chart by swing speed

Driver swing speed Driver 7-iron Wedge
    80 mph 170 yd 106 yd 84 yd
    95 mph 219 yd 137 yd 108 yd
    110 mph 261 yd 163 yd 129 yd

Carry distances for solid strikes. Your lofts, shafts and ball will move individual clubs by a few yards.

    Golf distance calculator FAQs

How far should I hit each golf club?

It depends on your swing speed. Enter it in the golf distance calculator above for a chart of all twelve clubs. As a guide, a 93 mph driver swing gives about 213 yards with the driver and 133 with a 7-iron.

    How far should I hit a 7-iron?

A golfer who swings the driver at 93 mph, about average for a man, carries a 7-iron around 133 yards. At 80 mph it is closer to 105.

What is the difference between carry distance and total distance?

Carry is how far the ball flies before it lands. Total adds the bounce and roll. Irons are chosen by carry, because that is what clears the bunker.

Why are the distance gaps between my clubs uneven?

Usually loft. Modern sets pack the lofts closer together in the long irons, and strike quality drops with longer shafts. A gapping session on a launch monitor will show it.
