Course slope rating calculator

This course slope rating calculator works out the slope rating of a golf course from its course rating and bogey rating. Slope has nothing to do with hills. It measures how much harder a course gets for a bogey golfer than for a scratch golfer.

Course slope rating calculator: enter the two ratings

Enter the course rating and bogey rating for a set of tees. You get the slope rating and what it means for a 20 handicap.

What is a course slope rating?

A slope rating is a number between 55 and 155 that shows how much more difficult a golf course plays for a bogey golfer than for a scratch golfer. A course of standard difficulty has a slope rating of 113. The higher the slope rating, the more strokes a higher-handicap player receives there.

How to use the course slope rating calculator

    1. Choose men or women, because the multiplier is different.
    2. Enter the course rating for the tees.
    3. Enter the bogey rating for the same tees.
    4. Read the slope rating and what it does to a 20 handicap.

    Course slope rating formula

Slope rating = (bogey rating − course rating) × 5.381 for men

Slope rating = (bogey rating − course rating) × 4.24 for women

The two multipliers are chosen so that a course of standard difficulty lands on 113. For men that is a gap of 21 strokes between the scratch and the bogey golfer.

    Slope rating calculation example

A set of men's tees has a course rating of 71.0 and a bogey rating of 95.5. The gap is 24.5 strokes. Multiply by 5.381 and the slope rating is 131.8, which rounds to 132. With a bogey rating of 92.5 the same course would have a slope rating of 116.

    What is a bogey rating?

It is the score a bogey golfer is expected to shoot from those tees: a player of about 20 handicap for men, or 24 for women. It is worked out the same way as the course rating, hole by hole, but for a shorter and less accurate player.

    Course slope rating calculator FAQs

    How is slope rating calculated?

Subtract the course rating from the bogey rating and multiply by 5.381 for men or 4.24 for women. The course slope rating calculator above does it and shows the working.

What is an average slope rating for a golf course?

113 is the standard. The scale runs from 55, the gentlest, to 155, the most severe. Championship courses are often in the 140s.

Does a higher slope rating mean a harder course?

Harder for higher handicappers in particular. The course rating tells you how hard the course is for a scratch player. Slope tells you how quickly it gets worse as ability drops.

Where can I find the bogey rating of a course?

Scorecards rarely print it, but national course rating databases list it for every set of tees alongside the course rating and slope rating.
