Golf handicap differential calculator
This golf handicap differential calculator works out the score differential for any round. Before a round touches your handicap it is boiled down to this one number, which answers a plain question: how good was that score, given how hard the course was that day?
Score differential = (113 ÷ slope rating) × (adjusted gross score − course rating − PCC)
Golf handicap differential calculator: enter your round
Enter your adjusted gross score and the course rating and slope rating of the tees you played. You get the score differential for the round.
What is a handicap differential in golf?
A handicap differential, now officially called a score differential, is your score restated for a course of standard difficulty. It takes the strokes you were over the course rating and scales them by the slope rating. Your Handicap Index is built from the lowest 8 handicap differentials of your last 20 rounds.
How to use the golf handicap differential calculator
- Enter your adjusted gross score for the round.
- Enter the course rating and slope rating of the tees you played.
- Leave the playing conditions at 0 unless your handicap system published a PCC for the day.
- Read the handicap differential and the sum behind it.
Golf handicap differential formula
Handicap differential = (113 ÷ slope rating) × (adjusted gross score − course rating − PCC)
The slope part matters more than it looks. Ten over the rating on a slope of 140 is a better round than ten over on a slope of 110, and the handicap differential formula gives you credit for it.
Handicap differential calculation example
You shoot 88 on tees with a course rating of 71.4 and a slope rating of 128, on a normal day. First, 88 − 71.4 = 16.6. Then 16.6 × (113 ÷ 128) = 14.65. Rounded to one decimal place, the handicap differential is 14.7.
What counts as adjusted gross score?
It is your gross score with any disaster holes capped at net double bogey: par, plus two, plus any handicap strokes you receive on that hole. Holes you did not finish are recorded the same way.
Golf handicap differential calculator FAQs
How do you calculate a golf handicap differential?
Subtract the course rating from your adjusted gross score, multiply by 113 and divide by the slope rating. Round to one decimal place. The golf handicap differential calculator above shows each step.
What is PCC in a handicap differential?
The playing conditions calculation compares everyone's scores on the day with what was expected. If conditions made scoring unusually hard or easy, it adjusts every differential by between −1 and +3.
Can a handicap differential be negative?
Yes. Score lower than the course rating and the differential drops below zero. That is how plus handicaps are made.
How is a 9-hole handicap differential worked out?
A 9-hole score is combined with an expected score for the nine you did not play, based on your index, to make an 18-hole differential. Your handicap system does this for you when you post the score.
